Programme Structure:

The programme consists of four modules.

Module 1: Identification of systems, equipment, and components

• Credit: 1 ECTS

Module 2: Reading of drawings and calculations when laying of limestone and hollow concrete blocks to line

• Credit: 1 ECTS

Module 3: Laying of limestone and hollow concrete block to line

• Credit: 1 ECTS

Module 4: Health and safety during work practices

• Credit: 1 ECTS

Programme Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the programme, learners will:

• Identify and describe tasks involved in limestone and hollow concrete block laying, including key components and materials.

• Recognize potential hazards and risks on-site and implement protective measures for existing services.

• Read and interpret construction drawings issued by qualified personnel.

• Lay limestone and hollow concrete blocks to line accurately, following drawings and specifications.

Skills:

• Plan and sequence block-laying tasks efficiently.

• Apply safety measures to protect people and services during construction.

• Interpret technical drawings to guide block-laying operations.

• Execute precise block-laying with correct alignment and spacing.

Module 1 – Identification of systems, equipment, and components

Learners will:

• Understand different masonry units, damp proof systems, wall-ties, and insulating materials.

• Identify, inspect, and select appropriate materials, tools, and equipment for limestone and hollow concrete block laying.

• Apply safety regulations and communicate effectively with colleagues and supervisors.

• Implement sustainable practices to reduce material waste and environmental impact.

Skills:

• Select and use materials, mortar mixes, and cutting tools correctly.

• Operate equipment safely and efficiently.

• Minimise construction waste and follow environmental procedures.

• Demonstrate independence and competency in identifying, testing, and troubleshooting systems, equipment, and components.

Module 2 – Reading of drawings and calculations when laying of limestone and hollow concrete blocks to line

Learners will:

• Interpret construction plans and specifications to select appropriate masonry units.
• Establish building datum grids and levels accurately.
• Calculate quantities of blocks, mortar, and consumables for construction projects.
• Monitor and address deviations from tolerances during work.
• Translate technical drawings into practical work layouts.
• Measure, check levels, and ensure plumb accuracy.
• Perform material take-offs and quantity calculations.
• Maintain accurate records of variations and deviations.
• Apply safety procedures and communicate effectively within a construction team.

Module 3 – Laying of limestone and hollow concrete blocks to line

 

Learning Outcomes:

Learners will:

• Measure, mark, and cut hollow concrete blocks to size.

• Lay blocks for single and double walls, columns, tall walls, and lift shafts, maintaining alignment and tolerances.

• Set out datum grids and levels accurately.

• Use access platforms safely and handle reinforcement bars as required.

• Apply safe work practices and comply with health and safety procedures throughout the laying process.

Skills:

• Select, use, maintain, and store tools and equipment for block laying.

• Apply DPC/DPM and other materials correctly.

• Ensure accuracy in cuts, joint alignment, levels, and angular measurements.

• Read, interpret, and apply technical drawings and metric dimensions.

• Monitor work for deviations and correct misalignments.

• Communicate effectively and collaborate with the construction team to maintain quality and safety standards.

Module 4 – Health and safety during work practices

 

Learning Outcomes:
Learners will:

• Maintain safe working practices, protecting themselves, colleagues, and the public.

• Safely use and maintain tools, equipment, and materials, including DPC/DPM and hazardous materials.

• Erect, use, and dismantle access platforms under 2 meters safely.

• Set up safety barriers, edge protection, and warning signage.

• Isolate services (water, electricity) when necessary and respond to environmental hazards such as flooding, noise, and vibrations.

• Follow emergency procedures and utilize first aid and fire-fighting facilities.

• Apply safety principles in constructing walls, columns, lift shafts, and other structures.

Skills:

• • Apply and enforce health and safety procedures on-site.

  • Identify, report, and mitigate hazards.

  • Use personal protective equipment correctly.

  • Follow workplace policies for tool and equipment maintenance.

  • Read and interpret risk assessments and safety instructions.

  • Monitor and maintain safe working conditions, including housekeeping and environmental factors.

  • Collaborate with supervisors and colleagues to ensure a safe work environment.

Entry Requirements:

1. Applicants should be able to read & write in English.
2. Applicants must be 18 years of age or over
3. Applicants should have successfully completed the MQF Level 2 Award in Understanding Health and Safety- Construction or an equivalent qualification is a prerequisite for prospective applicants.
4. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL): Applicants lacking traditional academic qualifications may be eligible through RPL.
