Programme Structure:
The programme consists of two modules.
Module 1: Identification of systems, equipment, and components
Module 2: Reading of drawings and calculations and assisting in building a rubble wall
Programme Learning Outcomes:
Learners will gain knowledge of:

The types and construction methods of dry rubble walls.

Materials, tools, and equipment used in wall construction.

Proper drainage, foundation preparation, and environmental considerations.

Basic geological and site safety principles relevant to wall building.
Learners will develop skills to:

Prepare and set out a worksite for dry rubble wall construction.

Select, shape, and lay stones using correct techniques.
-
Construct corners, angles, and apply finishing methods with precision.

Use appropriate tools safely and maintain effective work practices on-site.
Module 1 – Identification of systems, equipment, and components
Learners will gain knowledge of:

Different types of dry rubble wall systems, their design, materials, and construction methods.

Equipment, tools, and components used in wall building and their functions.
-
Roles of key wall elements such as foundation, base course, hearting, through stones, and coping.
-
Safety protocols and regulations for working with tools, equipment, and materials.
Learners will develop skills to:

Identify and evaluate systems, tools, and components used in dry rubble wall construction.

Interpret technical drawings and record relevant information accurately.
-
Communicate effectively with supervisors, colleagues, and clients.

Apply safety procedures and maintain compliance with workplace standards.
Module 2 – Reading of drawings including calculations and assisting in building a rubble wall
Learners will understand:

How to read and interpret construction drawings, including plans, elevations, and sections.

The symbols, annotations, and measurements used in technical drawings.

Basic calculations for estimating material quantities such as stone, sand, and cement.
-
The types and correct use of tools and equipment in rubble wall construction.

Key construction techniques including stone selection, laying foundations, and building corners and copings.

Health and safety practices related to building dry rubble walls.
Learners will be able to:

Interpret drawings and translate them into practical construction work.

Perform basic construction-related calculations.

Use measuring and leveling tools accurately.

Assist in laying stones according to design specifications.

Entry Requirements:
- Applicants should be able to read & write in English.
- Applicants must be 18 years of age or over
- Applicants should have successfully completed the MQF Level 2 Award in Understanding Health and Safety- Construction or an equivalent qualification is a prerequisite for prospective applicants.
- Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL): Applicants lacking traditional academic qualifications may be eligible through RPL.
