Understand and apply key health and safety regulations in the construction industry.
Identify potential hazards and apply safe work practices.
Respond effectively to emergencies and demonstrate basic first aid procedures.
Recognise and handle common hazardous materials found on construction sites.
Identify and use essential tools, equipment, and materials for block laying.
Interpret and follow construction drawings accurately.
Apply correct block laying techniques for various structures.
Prepare and maintain safe work areas, including tall walls and lift shafts.
Use safety barriers, signage, and protective equipment correctly.
Work responsibly and collaboratively within a construction team.
Identify different types of masonry units, materials, and their specific uses.
Differentiate between Damp Proof Course and Damp Proof Membrane using manufacturer details.
Understand various mortar mixes and their applications in block laying.
Use levelling and alignment tools for horizontal, vertical, and inclined planes.
Select and apply suitable tools, cutting disks, and safety procedures for limestone and concrete block work.
Learners will:
Interpret technical drawings and specifications for limestone and hollow concrete block laying.
Calculate quantities of blocks, mortar, and consumables for simplified projects.
Set out datum grids, levels, and work areas accurately using appropriate tools.
Select suitable masonry units and understand their properties and uses.
Apply safe work practices and maintain a compliant work environment.
Communicate effectively with team members and supervisors to ensure quality and accuracy.
Skills:
Translate drawing details into practical block laying set-outs.
Use spirit levels and plumb lines to ensure accuracy.
Perform basic calculations for materials and quantities.
Measure and record work using metric units.
Apply knowledge of annotated building drawings in practical scenarios.
Module 3: Laying of limestone and hollow concrete block to line, in accordance with the health and safety workplace standards
Learning Outcomes:
Learners will:
Apply safe working practices, preventing hazards to themselves, colleagues, and the public.
Lay hollow concrete blocks to construct single and double walls, columns, tall walls, and lift shafts within specified tolerances.
Set out datum grids and levels accurately, and assist with reinforcement placement where required.
Assemble, use, and dismantle access platforms safely (<2m).
Handle and store hazardous materials correctly, following health and safety procedures.
Operate tools and equipment for block laying competently and maintain a safe work environment.
Skills:
Select and use tools, equipment, and materials safely and appropriately.
Apply block laying techniques for walls, columns, and shafts.
Measure and mark work areas using metric units and angular measurements.
Follow emergency procedures and health and safety protocols.
Monitor work for alignment, quality, and compliance with specifications.
