Types, materials, and techniques used in piling works.
Basic geotechnical principles and soil mechanics.
Health and safety regulations, risk assessment, and PPE use.
Piling equipment, its operation, maintenance, and safety requirements.
The assistant operative’s role in site setup, clearance, and piling operations.
Learners will develop skills to:
Assist in preparing, setting up, and dismantling piling rigs and equipment.
Support drilling, pile installation, and testing operations safely and accurately.
Maintain and carry out basic repairs on piling equipment.
Record and report work progress and site activities.
Communicate effectively and follow supervisors’ instructions while maintaining safety standards.
Learners will gain knowledge of:
Types of piling works, equipment, and team roles.
Site mobilisation, preparation, clearance, and safety procedures.
Soil types, levelling, excavation, and environmental considerations.
Site management, communication, and teamwork principles.
Learners will develop skills to:
Assist in mobilising, setting up, and maintaining piling equipment.
Carry out safe and efficient site clearance and preparation tasks.
Read and interpret site plans and specifications.
Operate tools and machinery safely and identify potential hazards.
Record and report site activities accurately while following instructions and deadlines.
Learners will demonstrate competence in:
Supporting safe, organised piling operations under supervision.
Applying health, safety, and environmental standards on-site.
Communicating effectively and contributing to efficient teamwork.

Different types of
excavation, boring, and pile construction equipment and their uses.
Safety requirements, maintenance procedures, and environmental considerations.
Basic excavation, boring, and piling techniques.
How to interpret technical drawings and specifications.
Learners will develop skills to:
Assist in setting up, operating, and maintaining excavation and piling machinery.
Follow safety procedures and use appropriate PPE.
Support excavation, boring, and pile installation activities according to site plans.
Monitor and report equipment performance and maintenance needs.
Communicate effectively with supervisors and team members.
Learners will demonstrate competence in:
