Intakes are scheduled on demand once a minimum number of participants is reached. Interested applicants are invited to register their interest and will be notified of the next available start date.
Applicants should be able to read & write in English.
Applicants must be 18 years of age or over.
Completion of the MQF Level 2 Award in Understanding Health and Safety – Construction or equivalent.
Completion of the MQF Level 2 Award in Piling Work Assistant Operative or provide work history declaration demonstrating at least three years of experience.
Provide a health certificate issued by a General Practitioner confirming fitness to follow the course.
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) may be applied for applicants lacking formal academic qualifications.
The programme consists of three modules.
Module 1: Piling work mobilisation, preparation, and site clearance
Credit: 1 ECTS
Module 2: Operate and control operations of plant, machinery, or equipment for excavation and boring work
Credit: 1 ECTS
Module 3: Operate and control operations of plant, machinery, or equipment for pile construction
Credit: 1 ECTS
Learners will gain knowledge of:
Piling techniques, materials, and equipment.
Health and safety regulations, risk assessments, and PPE use.
Site preparation, mobilisation, and clearance procedures.
Operation, maintenance, and control of piling machinery and equipment.
Reading and interpreting technical drawings and specifications.
The operative’s role in safe, efficient piling work.
Learners will develop skills to:
Assist in mobilising, preparing, and clearing piling sites.
Operate and maintain excavation and pile construction machinery safely.
Execute piling operations according to technical drawings and lift plans.
Communicate effectively with supervisors and team members.
Record and report site activities and equipment performance.
Learners will gain knowledge of:
Site mobilisation, preparation, and clearance procedures.
Safety measures, risk assessment, and environmental considerations.
Handling and transport of piling materials and equipment.
Learners will develop skills to:
Mobilise personnel, equipment, and materials safely.
Prepare access routes, platforms, and piling areas.
Conduct site surveys and pre-piling checks.
Follow safety protocols and supervise site activities.
Learners will demonstrate competence in:
Planning and executing site preparation safely and efficiently.
Complying with environmental and regulatory requirements.
Communicating and coordinating with other trades and teams.
Learners will gain knowledge of:
Excavation and boring equipment types, functions, and safety requirements.
Pre-operational checks, planning, and setup of equipment.
Basic maintenance and operation principles.
Learners will develop skills to:
Operate excavation and boring machinery safely.
Conduct pre-start checks and routine maintenance.
Interpret drawings and specifications to support piling operations.
Communicate effectively with supervisors and team members.
Learners will demonstrate competence in:
Controlling machinery operations safely and efficiently.
Monitoring performance and addressing equipment issues.
Applying health, safety, and environmental standards on-site.

Piling equipment and methods of pile installation.
Construction drawings, specifications, and pile construction sequencing.
Safety protocols during pile construction and testing.
Learners will develop skills to:
Operate and control machinery for pile construction safely.
Perform pre-start checks and routine maintenance.
Monitor and adjust equipment during piling operations.
Collaborate effectively with team members for smooth operations.
Learners will demonstrate competence in:
Executing piling operations in compliance with safety and quality standards.
Maintaining accurate records of equipment usage and site activities.
Troubleshooting equipment and coordinating corrective actions efficiently.
