• Read and interpret architectural drawings.

• Cut, shape, and dress various stones such as marble, granite, limestone, and sandstone.

• Apply multiple stone masonry techniques, including chiselling, sawing, and polishing.

• Prepare and mix mortar and set stones accurately.

• Estimate materials and costs for projects.

• Work safely and collaboratively on construction sites.

Module 1 – Health and Safety During Work Practices

ECTS: 1
Description:
This unit covers essential health and safety principles in stone masonry. Learners identify potential hazards, conduct risk assessments, apply PPE correctly, and follow emergency procedures. Practical exercises help learners apply regulations and best practices in real work environments.

Learning Outcomes:

• Identify and categorize workplace hazards specific to stone masonry.

• Carry out risk assessments and apply control measures.

• Use and maintain PPE correctly.

• Demonstrate emergency response procedures including first aid and evacuation.

• Apply safe working practices for stone masonry tools and equipment.

Module 2 – Identification of Systems, Equipment, and Components

ECTS: 1
Description:
This unit trains learners to identify, select, and safely use stone masonry tools, materials, and machinery. It includes understanding system types (dry-stone, rubble, ashlar, veneer), evaluating quality, performing maintenance, and complying with relevant standards and codes.

• Identify systems, tools, and components used in stone masonry.

• Evaluate materials for quality and suitability.

• Apply maintenance and troubleshooting techniques for equipment.

• Use tools safely and efficiently according to regulations.

Module 3 – Reading of Drawings and Calculations

Description:
This unit develops competence in reading and interpreting technical drawings, understanding measurements, geometry, and performing calculations essential for masonry layout and execution. Learners practice using measurement tools and software for accuracy in projects.

• Interpret architectural and structural drawings for stone work.

• Perform area, volume, and weight calculations.

• Identify symbols and notations on technical plans.

Module 4 – Practices for Building of Stone Masonry

ECTS: 1
Description:
This unit provides hands-on training in traditional and modern masonry techniques. Learners construct stone structures using various bonds, finishes, and layouts while applying correct mortar techniques and alignment procedures.

Learning Outcomes:

• Prepare foundations and layouts for stone masonry.

• Cut, dress, and position stones according to design specifications.

• Apply dry-stone and mortared techniques.

• Produce consistent joints and finishes.

• Follow structural and aesthetic design standards.

• Perform site cleanup and maintenance of tools post-project.

Entry Requirements:

• Applicants must be 18 years of age or over.

• Applicants must be able to read and write in English.

• Successful completion of MQF Level 2 Award in Understanding Health and Safety – Construction or equivalent.

• Successful completion of MQF Level 3 Award in Block Layer.

• Applicants may apply through the Academy’s Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) policy.
