Target Audience: Skilled workers who have successfully completed the MQF Level 2 Award in Assistant Tower Crane Operator or have at least three years of relevant work experience. Applicants must be 18 years or older and able to read and write in English. A health certificate issued by a General Practitioner confirming fitness for the course is required.

The programme consists of three modules.
Module 1: Daily walk-around checks prior to operating, setting up, and demounting a tower crane
Credit: 1 ECTS
Module 2: Draw and prepare a lift plan
Credit: 1 ECTS
Module 3: Carrying out a lifting operation using a tower crane
Credit: 1 ECTS
Learners will gain knowledge of:
The importance of pre-operational checks and daily inspections for safe tower crane operation.
Crane components including hoist, slewing system, boom, jib, counterweights, and rigging.
Load charts, lift plans, and calculation of crane capacities.
Rigging and lifting equipment selection and safe lifting procedures.
Roles and responsibilities of personnel involved in lifting operations.
Health, safety, and regulatory standards applicable to tower crane operation.
Learners will develop skills to:
Perform pre-operational checks and identify defects affecting safe crane operation.
Draw, prepare, and interpret lift plans.
Conduct lifting operations safely and efficiently, including crane setup and dismantling.
Operate crane controls and monitor loads during lifting operations.
Communicate effectively with riggers, signalers, and other site personnel.
Respond to emergencies and adapt to changing site conditions.
Maintain records of inspections and lifting operations.
Apply correct procedures for routine maintenance and reeving system adjustments.

Focuses on pre-operational checks of tower crane components including hoist, slewing system, boom, and jib. Learners conduct inspections, identify defects, and complete documentation to ensure compliance with safety regulations.

Description:
Covers creating and understanding lift plans, including selecting crane, calculating load and centre of gravity, rigging, signalling procedures, and ensuring compliance with safety regulations.
Learning Outcomes:
Autonomy & Responsibility: Collaborate to create lift plans, ensure compliance, supervise operations, advise team members.
Knowledge: Types of ropes, pulleys, sheaves, drums; rigging techniques; load chart interpretation; safety protocols.
Skills: Select and arrange reeving components, interpret load charts, adjust system within safe limits, conduct safety inspections, communicate effectively.
Description:
Covers practical lifting operations based on the lift plan. Learners operate, set up, and dismantle the tower crane, monitor operations, communicate with the team, and follow safety procedures.
Learning Outcomes:
Autonomy & Responsibility: Supervise and carry out lifting operations safely, respond to emergencies, maintain records, manage crane operations, liaise with site personnel.
Knowledge: Planning and preparation, roles of personnel, load calculations, rigging, environmental factors affecting lifts, communication protocols, regulations and standards.
Skills: Interpret drawings and specifications, understand load charts, identify hazards, create safe lift plans, operate crane safely, monitor loads, communicate with signal person, respond to changes and emergencies, conduct pre- and post-operational checks.
